Cancer is the second leading cause of death in this country. However, improvements in cancer detection, diagnosis, and treatment have increased the survival rate for many types of cancer. About 64 percent of all people diagnosed with cancer will be alive 5 years after diagnosis (National Cancer Institute www.cancer.gov)
According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 1.5 million new cases of cancer were diagnosed in the United States in 2009. In that same year, the US recorded more than a half million deaths from cancer.
